You know that nearly clear liquid that separates from the curd when milk coagulates during the process of cheese-making?

Well that’s whey.

Many years ago, whey was praised as a very important food but more recently it has been discarded as waste. It wasn’t until the early 1980’s that dairy groups began to explore possible uses for whey other than dumping it.

It was then that researchers developed different ways of removing fats, milk salts and water from whey. This happened to be quite good for at the time there was a big push to reduce fats in the diet which triggered a lot of research.

Why whey is so beneficial is due to its dense content of high quality protein components. It is one of the most compete and biologically active forms or protein available because it contains all the “essential” amino acids as well as additional ones.

This so-called waste product is proving to be one of the best supplements to help prevent and treat everything from obesity and diabetes to cancer. It is even touted to help relieve anxiety and sleeping problems.

In fact, it is used as the main protein ingredient in some meal replacements and also taken by athletes on a daily basis to help improve performance, endurance and relaxation during resting periods.

It was in the Netherlands that researchers gave 29 subjects a specific whey protein. The results improved ability to cope, reduced cortisol, a hormone produced by unresolved stress and increased the availability of tryptophan in the brain which in turn triggers serotonin production in order to handle stress better.

Now choosing the right whey can be somewhat tricky. As it stands, most whey products are pasteurized under high heat which destroys all the enzymes and that is why a lot of people will suffer from bloating and gas after eating it.

Finding one that still retains all of its enzymatic properties could prove to be a challenge but not impossible.

When on a weight loss program, whey is your key ingredient to insure that you are getting all the protein your body needs for re-building and re-energizing.

Why not have the best that new technology can bring!
