The Glandular Connection…
How often have you heard from some overweight people that it’s all because of their glands. You may have laughed and thought they were just saying that as an excuse.
Well, they very well could be right!
Our glandular systems: adrenals, thyroid and pituitary are extremely important for a well balanced metabolism that if these are out of whack, gaining weight is definitely a side-effect.
I don’t want to go into all the details but a short review of these systems are in order.
The adrenals help in many areas, such as regulating our blood sugar and blood pressure, producing hormones and balancing mineral levels and helping our body deal with stress. One possible cause for this system to not function optimally can be traced to the lack of proper minerals in our food.
It goes without saying that our soils have lost their nutrients and can no longer support good health without external supplementation. No wonder we are being bombarded by vitamin ads on a daily basis.
The thyroid can also suffer by being over or under active. Most people’s is under active and that’s why there are so many on medication such as “synthroid”, a synthetic thyroid booster. Much of the problem stems from inadequate amounts of iodine in the diet.
Here we go again. Back to what we eat or more to the point what we don’t eat!
To make matters worse, fluoride and chlorine which are added to some water supplies and to processed products further depress thyroid activity. What may be the biggest cause is the use of soybeans, soybean oil and corn oil. It was found that soy infant formulas contirubted to the formation of goiters due to iodine deficiency.
This problem can be helped through natural supplementation of iodine but it still does not solve the underlying problem that it is missing from our diet.
Although pea size, the pituitary plays a major role in keeping our body balanced. It isn’t called the “master gland” for nothing.
It produces human growth hormones and regulates the thyroid, adrenals, kidneys and our sex organs and to do this right it needs a quality fatty acid and cholesterol. Poor old cholesterol has gotten a bad rap over the years but it is essential to the pituitary’s proper function.
Then why are so many on cholesterol lowering drugs? You may wish to read my cholesterol article “High vs Low Cholesterol.. Is This The Real Question?”
With the war against fat that has been raging for so many years, one is really left with more questions than answers. But one answer is really that our food does not contain all that we need for us to survive in a healthy and disease free way unless you do something extra.
One of the best things to do is to add good fats to your diet and minerals that help re-balance your glandular system. Let’s hope that your food is giving you what your body needs.
I have found that a program supplemented with quality essential minerals was the key to my weight loss success and it can also be for you.
