Mountain Dew Soft Drink
Obviously, the last time you drank a Mountain Dew soft drink, you never thought that it could be damaging your thyroid or you would not have drank it, right?
Interestingly enough, this soft drink and your car’s unpholstery have something in common and that is bromine.
How is bromine toxicity dangerous to your health?
Because, bromines disrupt the endocrine system and compete with the same receptors that are used to capture iodine which your thyroid needs for optimum health.
The more bromine you expose your body to, the less it will hold on to the iodine that it needs.
Now iodine is not used only by the thyroid.
Bromine is found in such places as:
- pesticides (specifically methyl bromide, used mainly on strawberries, predominantly in California)
- plastics that make up computers
- bakery goods which often contain a “dough conditioner” called potassium bromate
- soft drinks (including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas), in the form of brominated vegetable oils (BVOs)
- medications such as Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (for ulcers), and anesthesia agents
- fire retardants (PBDEs) used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, and mattresses
- bromine-based hot tub and swimming pool treatments
Bromine toxicity is a definite possible results of overexposure.
Here’s how bromine acts:
It displaces iodine which leads to an increased risk for breast, theyroid gand, ovary and prostate cancers. Because it is so much more in the news now than before, this phenomena is now known as the Bromide Dominance Theory.
It doesn’t stop there. Bromide builds up in your central nervous system and can cause many other problems such as actue paranoia and other psychotic symptoms.
If you have any of these symptoms, be on the alert and get checked:
Where do you look for bromides?
in bread as it’s in all commercial flour (causes bleeding and inflammation of the gums
It’s interesting to note that Japan cancer rates are much lower because they eat more iodine related food.
A special mention about bromine and your thyroid.
Because bromine depletes iodine levels, hypothyroidism has risen greatly. The latest U.S. estimates that 13 million Americans have it but it is thought that the actual numbers are much greater to the tune of 10 to 40 percent more.
Avoiding bromine is like trying to avoid air pollution. It’s here and probably here to stay.
So what options does that leave you with?
- try eating organic as much as possible and that includes bread and flour
- use ozone in your hot tub instead of chemical treatments
- use personal products without toxins. What goes on you goes in you!
- cross ventilate your car or room as quickly as possible, use fans to disperse toxic fumes
- avoid unfermented soy which causes havoc on your thryoid (this includes soy milk)
- cleanse often and give your body the nutrients it needs to rebuild
