More Why’s For Minimizing Your BPA Exposure..

My last post exposed the hazards of BPA (bisphenol  A). I covered the health effects and where you can find it.

Here, I will look at how you can minimize your exposure to BPA other than just telling you to avoid plastic containers and canned goods.

How often do you buy canned tomatoes? Well, I for one always have a can or two in my cupboard.

It seems that canned tomato sauce is likely to have higher levels of BPA because of the high acidity found in tomatoes which causes BPA to leach from the lining of the can.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), in an independent laboratory test, detected BPA in over half of 97 cans of name-brand fruit, vegetables, soda, and other commonly eaten canned goods.

BPA is not regulated by government safety standards. However, it is KNOWN that 25 times the dose of BPA causes birth defects in lab tests and the EWG’s standards haven’t been revised for 20 years.

As for plastics, when worn out or scratched, they may leach even more chemicals into your food, as do hot beverages. Take a cup of coffee from a plastic-lined paper cup, you could be exposed to 55 times more BPA than normal.

Ok, so we avoid cans and plastic to limit our exposure, but what really caught my attention during further research was to learn that low exposure to BPA can actually be more toxic.

How can that be so?

It seems that yes, higher doses cause greater harm but tests show that low levels can fall below our body’s radar to naturally detox this toxin and in one study prostate cancer cells grew 70% faster in lab animals than those that had higher doses.

In another study, lower levels resulted in higher rates of breast cell growth that precede breast cancer.

So with all of that said, let me be a little more specific in giving your guidelines to avoid BPA:

  • · Buy your tomato sauce in glass jars
  • · Consume fresh fruits and vegetables instead of canned
  • · Purchase beverages in glass bottles (Canned soda and juice often contain some BPA.)
  • · Use powdered infant formula instead of a ready-mixed liquid (an assessment from the Environmental Working Group found that liquid formulas contain more BPA than powdered brands.)
  • · Think in terms of moderation

As usual those most at risk are children and fetuses, which does not sit well with me at all and should not with you either.

That’s why using an effective cleansing method to rid the body of these toxins is no longer just a once a year thing but has become an essential part for prevention of illness before the bottom falls out and you find yourself flat on your back and at the mercy of your doctor.
