This might be a question you never thought of asking before. What is an effective length of time to exercise that will help you lose weight?
We often hear that we need to exercise 1 hour a day for 5 days.
But do we really have to?
It seems that a recent study found that indeed, you need to do 1 hour a day, 5 days a week if you want to lose weight. Mind you, this is for overweight people and not everyone needs this amount of exercise.
Often, those who are overweight will be suffering from high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol or are diabetic. This high level of exercise will help normalize their health problems.
Does this mean that you must become a slave to the treadmill and sign up for 90-minute long jog sessions everyday?
Of course not! There’s a little bit more to it than that.
So how do you get the most exercise benefit in the shortest possible time?
There are several ways to do just that:
- Take up jogging, outdoors if possible, otherwise you may get bored staring at the wall.
- Be cautious though not to focus only on long distance training as it can work against you by adding oxidative stress.
- Adding a quality protein replacement is also important to avoid losing muscle mass.
- Doing interval training is another tactic where you exercise in short bursts of high intensity with periods of rest.
- One study found that those who cycled for 40 minutes with an alternating 4 minute burst and 2 minutes of rest actually improved their cardio fitness by 13% and also burned 36% more fat.Yale University also found a way to burn more fat in 20 minutes rather than 40.
- In their trial, women either exercised for 20 minutes, alternating 8 seconds of sprinting on a bike with 12 seconds of exercising lightly, or exercising at a regular pace for 40 minutes.After 15 weeks at 3 times a week frequency, those who did the 20-minute alternating routine lost three times as much fat as the other women.The bottom line? If you only have a short time to exercise, doing it “interval style” can greatly increase your results.
Doing cardio exercises is great but you also need to add weight resistance for a fully rounded program to keep muscle mass.
