The above title is certainly an expression you have heard before.  Although it was first meant for computer programming, it is now used quite easily to refer to what we put into our body.

If you feed it garbage, then that’s the only material it has to use for building and repair.

One great building nutrient your body relies greatly on is essential fatty acids, mostly the omega-3 fat DHA.  60% of your brain cells are made of  this fat.   If you are not giving your body enough omega-3 fatty acids, it has to substitute it with omega-6 in the nerve cell membranes.  This will cause lower serotonin levels, (the feel good hormone produced in the brain) and will hinder how the brain processes connect.

You might think that this is just a theory but actual testing has revealed that the body tissue composition of people in the US is quite different from that of the Japanese, especially when comparing nerve membranes.

Ours have a higher omega-6 count than the Japanese.  You might be saying, well so what?

The so what factor can be quite illuminating as it seems to relate directly with social behavior and increased violence.

Studies with animals deprived of omega-3 fatty acids show that over 2 generations, off-springs lose their ability to release both dopamine and serotonin effectively.  This change in brain structure and function ties directly to increased violence and problems in behavior.

In other words, children left with low dopamine as a result of early deficits in their own or their mother’s diets, cannot experience reward in the same way and they cannot learn from reward and punishment.  They cannot inhibit their impulses or regulate their emotional responses.

This is a very scary scenario!

But it is not irreversible.  If you are doubting how profound the effects of omega-3 can be in dealing with behavioral problems then try giving an aggressive teenager or child suffering with ADHD, some high quality fish oil capsules and see how different the child will be after just 3 months.  And if a multivitamin/mineral is added to the mix and sugar consumption reduced, then you will be meeting a totally new person ready to take on the world with anticipation and not with a stick.

Chia is also an excellent source of omega-3.  Remember those Chia pets where you rubbed the seeds all over some funny face or animal?  Tell your child that he can give it a hair cut just by eating it…

What better way to get a child engaged.  Omega-3 is not only for those deprived of it.  We all need it in order to function properly.  It also plays an important part in your weight loss program as it promotes healthy skin, better digestion and toxin elimination.

How true that what you put into your body is what it will use to keep you well or get you sick.
I also agree about omega3 being so important especially for children. I make sure my daughter has her fish oil every day to keep her brain healthy.
