Commercial Chocolate Hoax Your Health Pays For..
Since I’m all about toxins and cleansing, I really wondered at first how chocolate fit into this category.
Then it came to me that it was the perfect topic since most chocolates are loaded with sugar and the actual benefits one can derive from eating chocolate would be totally lost.
First of all, let’s be clear. Only dark chocolate has any health benefits.
Other chocolates such as milk chocolate, contains pasteurized milk and sugar which interferes with your body’s ability to absorb the beneficial antioxidants in the chocolate (and for those who don’t know, white chocolate actually contains no cocoa at all, it’s just more of the same with even less benefits.
Why is dark chocolate so good for us?
Because it contains flavonols, which have antioxidant properties that can help protect our body from damaging oxidative stress.
These antioxidant properties are directly related to helping our body with glucose metabolism, blood pressure and the cardio vascular system.
According to researchers, 6.7 grams of dark chocolate per day — a bit less than half a bar a week – is all one needs to do the trick.
In one of the largest studies done on the subject, it was found that people having moderate amounts of dark chocolate regularly had significantly lower levels of C-reactive protein in their blood, which indicates that their inflammatory state was considerably reduced.
But remember, these results are only if you eat dark chocolate.
Now why do most dark chocolates contain so much sugar?
That’s because dark chocolate has a compound called, epicatechin, from unrefined cocoa, which is bitter to the taste and therefore removed from commercial cocoas.
However, epicatechin is what makes dark chocolate so good for us in the first place.
There is a way to use chocolate as health tool, though.
If eating 6.7 grams is the ideal amount to stay healthy then wouldn’t it be smart if you could eat a chocolate that actually was of really high quality and minimally processed?
As a general rule, it’s best to look for varieties that use the least destructive processing techniques and preserve the highest levels of the beneficial polyphenolic bioflavanoids that are naturally present in cocoa.
Generally speaking, dark, organic chocolate contains the most flavonols, but the best choice would be raw cacao, which is relatively bitter because it doesn’t have sugar in it.
Opting for commercial processed chocolate is not a good idea. You would only be falling for an advertising promise which most chocolates cannot deliver.
Why? Because most of them have soybean oils, sugar and unsavory ingredients added to them.
Healthy is not what I would call this hoax!
Some even have extremely high quantities of lead present.
There’s also the issue of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and the rest, so you should hold off eating these chocolates as most contain so much sugar that it will depress your immune system.
But there is a dark chocolate out there that surpasses all criteria for being of high quality with extremely low quantities of sugar.
