But you may be doing just that every time you use baby bath products, even if it says “gentle” or “pure” on the bottle.
Just recently, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics advocacy group, had lotions, baby shampoo and other infant care products analyzed only to find that they contain trace amounts of chemicals believed to cause cancer.
The biggest offenders were well known names such as Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo and Baby Magic lotion, which tested positive for 1,4-dioxane or formaldehyde, or both.
Now even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has characterized these ingredients as carcinogens. But it’s not because these ingredients are added to the manufacturing process. It is more likely byproducts of the manufacturing process as formaldehyde is created when other chemicals in the product break down over time, and 1,4-dioxane is formed when foaming agents are combined with ethylene oxide or similar petrochemicals.
But where does that leave the caring parent?
Although there is no ban on these products in Canada and in the US, other countries, Sweden and Japan, found the information disturbing enough to ban and recall products that were found to contain these ingredients.
It’s bad enough that our children are exposed to toxins every day just through breathing, drinking and eating, but now 77% of the ingredients in 1,700 children’s products which have never been assessed for safety, are adding to the toxic burden our loved ones have to endure.
That’s why buying organic in all aspects of food and body products should be a priority for not only parents but every individual not yet in their coffin.
