Teflon is dangerous when it is heated to high temperatures as it releases a toxic gas that can cause serious health problems. This problem is not restricted to Teflon; it is true for any non-stick finish, as they are made from similar fluoride-type compounds.

Although, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) delayed calling for a “ban” on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the suspected carcinogen used in making Teflon, the agency fined Dupont  for some $300 million for hiding the harmful effects of PFOA.

Now, more than 20 attorneys, representing a total of 73 people, recently met to discuss the first steps in a $5-billion federal lawsuit. This consumer class-action case would be based on DuPont’s failure to alert customers about Teflon toxicity.

If successful, this lawsuit could eventually lead to refunds for millions of Teflon cookware purchasers throughout the United States.
DuPont also claims that human illness will be produced only in cases involving gross overheating or burning the food to an inedible state. Gary Craig, (EFT) a prominent health educator, begs to differ and linked his problem with frequent nighttime urination to his Teflon-coated frying pan.

So obviously, the strongest recommendation one can make when it comes to Teflon coated pans is to ditch the pans and avoid non-stick finishes.

If you plan to continue using them, please at least refrain from cooking with them at high heat or continuing to use them if they are scratched.

The best and safest cookware you can use is ceramic-coated metal as it is virtually inert and will not transfer any metal ions to your food.
